While searching for places to stay in Vieques, I stumbled upon what seemed to be my actual dream hotel. From its carefully crafted vintage decor to outdoor showers and an incredibly lush setting, the exquisitely designed bohemian space I had long constructed in my head apparently already existed.

 

Vieques, a small Caribbean island just off the coast of mainland Puerto Rico, is hardly known as a bustling metropolis. Yet, within moments of stepping through the wooden gates of Finca Victoria, I found myself giving into a whole new level of relaxation.

 

We had arrived slightly disheveled after piling all of our bags and camera gear onto one scooter and getting lost among the hills surrounding the Finca. Yet, we were immediately greeted with warm smiles as Sylvia De Marco, the owner of the Finca, invited us to take a seat, enjoy some breakfast and “feel the space.” The stress of the morning quickly washed away as we settled into our home for the day.

 

The original Finca, which had been a special place to Sylvia for many years, was destroyed in the devastating hurricanes of 2017. Our hearts sank when she showed us the photos of the aftermath of Maria- all that remained of the hillside oasis were piles of rubble and debris. The work that Sylvia and her team have done since taking over the property is truly astounding.

 

 

The Space

 

 

After enjoying our decadent breakfast we took some time to relax in El Livin, the Finca’s beautifully curated communal space. The poolside area consists of a kitchen, living room (with an amazing 70’s vibe couch that I need to find for my own apartment), and a wide selection of mostly locally made artisanal goods, and Sylvia’s two adorable dogs. It’s also where morning yoga and breakfast take place, both of which are included in all bookings.

 

 

We eventually managed to pry ourselves away from the Finca for one last trip to the beach-, but not before grabbing some provisions from El Livin’s snack and wine fridges- just one of the many special touches we would come to discover during our quick stay.

 

The Room

We stayed in one of three Victoria Suites, complete with a large terrace (and two hammocks!), a double-headed outdoor shower, and perfectly placed vintage decor.

 

Our room included a kitchenette with local coffee and herbal tea made from the Finca’s garden, essential oils for day and night, and biodegradable toiletries made in house.

 

As the sun began to set, we swayed in our hammocks, sipping on a Sauvignon Blanc. We gazed out at the beautiful Finca grounds, and toasted to the end of a truly magical trip.
